Coming Soon: A New Way to Support Loved Ones -- with Joy Calls
Share
At ONSCREEN, our mission has always been to make it easier for families to stay connected with their aging loved ones—while helping those loved ones feel more supported, seen, and less alone. Today, we’re excited to share a sneak peek at an upcoming feature that brings this mission to life in a whole new way: Joy Calls.
What Are Joy Calls?
Joy Calls are warm, thoughtful, AI-powered phone calls made by Joy—our friendly, compassionate AI companion. These calls are designed to gently check in on the well-being of older adults, spark moments of companionship, and offer timely reminders that help maintain daily routines.
Joy doesn’t require an app, or even any smart device. She simply calls—just like a friend would.
These are not scripted robocalls or cold voicebots. Joy Calls are designed to feel personal and natural, as if a thoughtful companion is checking in for a quick chat or a kind reminder.
How It Works
We’re intentionally removing the need for devices, apps, or screens. Instead, Joy Calls use the most familiar technology for older adults—the telephone.
No learning curve. No new tech. Just pick up the phone when it rings. If the call is missed, Joy will try again before alerting the caregiver.
Joy will proactively call on a schedule, but there’s also an option for the older adult to call Joy whenever they’d like to talk. Joy will answer with a warm, friendly voice.
Joy Calls are ideal for:
- Older adults living independently with minimal tech skills
- Residents in senior living communities or rural areas
- People with early-stage cognitive decline who still enjoy social interaction
Family or care professionals configure the types of calls—like a Hydration Reminder, Daily Wellness Check, or Friendly Hello. Each call is warm, respectful, and easy to understand. If something sounds off, like a missed meal or low energy, caregivers are notified.
Is This Dystopian? Let's Talk About It
We’ve heard the concern: Shouldn’t we be calling our parents ourselves? Isn’t it dystopian to have AI do it for us?
They’re valid questions. Joy Calls aren’t meant to replace human connection—they’re here to support it. Life gets busy. Good intentions often slip through the cracks. Joy fills in the gaps between meaningful human moments.
Think of Joy as a friendly helper—keeping an eye (or ear) on the people we love. It’s not science fiction; it’s what caregiving should be: thoughtful and consistent.
The Caregiver Experience
Caregivers receive a short summary after each call, plus daily or weekly digests. If something unusual is detected—like confusion or pain—Joy sends an alert. It’s peace of mind without the need to constantly check in yourself.
Why It Matters
We all want to do more for the people we love. But distance, time, and busy lives can get in the way.
- Peace of Mind – Know your loved one is being checked in on.
- Better Routines – Reinforce habits like drinking water, eating meals, or resting.
- Moments of Joy – A friendly voice can brighten a whole day.
- A Friendly Touch – Even though it’s AI, Joy’s voice feels warm and human.
These small touchpoints help keep us connected. That’s what we’re building.
And yes—this might officially make Joy Calls the first ONSCREEN product that works best when you're not looking at a screen. Going off screen may just be the way to go sometimes! 😄
